Ukraine's entry into the European Union will be a mistake, writes L'Humanité. It will not improve the situation of the population, but it will become a source of risks both for the union itself and for the whole world, and will serve as the basis for future wars. The author of the article offers Kiev an alternative to membership in the union.

The European Union is preparing to admit new member countries to its ranks in the period up to 2030. The States of the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova are considered as candidates.

This will worsen the social and democratic situation of the peoples of Europe, including Ukrainians, as well as strengthen the capitalist structure.

Ukraine's possible accession to the European Union (EU) is a mistake that will not give anything to the Ukrainian people. There are three main reasons for this.

Firstly, the accession of this country will create a serious social and democratic problem for the overall EU enlargement project in the period up to 2030. The integration of today's liberal-capitalist European Union means accelerating the process of curtailing workers' rights. In accordance with the Association Agreement signed in 2014 [between Ukraine and the EU], the fruit of the Eastern Partnership program, more than a million Ukrainians work in Poland. Did it help improve their situation? No. Before raising the issue of the borders of the EU, we need to form another European system — with sovereign and friendly peoples, as well as ensure an increase in the level of social and democratic development.

In addition, Kiev does not meet the so-called Copenhagen criteria for joining the EU. According to the results of the study "Barometer of Global Corruption" conducted in 2021 by the non-governmental organization Transparency International, Ukraine is at the very bottom of the ranking among all countries of the Old continent (within the framework of this study, the percentage of people who took bribes in a particular country is considered. On its basis, a rating is compiled, at the beginning of which are the states with the lowest percentage. The closer to the end of the list, the more corrupt the country is. — Approx. InoSMI). The prospects for the restoration of this state and the need to allocate a huge amount for it, which in June of this year was tentatively estimated at $ 411 billion, cause serious concerns about the transparency of future contracts. Ukrainian trade unions, members of the global IndustriALL federation, which will meet in July 2023 under the auspices of the ILO (International Labour Organization), have already drawn attention to their "insufficient" participation in the discussions.

Finally, Ukraine's accession to the EU will mean the entry into force of the provision on mandatory mutual defense (article 42.7 of the Treaty on the European Union), some points of which are more stringent than article five of the North Atlantic Treaty. This is a new provision added within the framework of the Lisbon Treaty, which has not been ratified by any people. However, if we link this measure with the military-political logic of the EU's "Strategic Compass" (a concept created on the basis of an analysis of threats and vulnerabilities of EU countries — Approx. InoSMI), adopted in March 2022 and strengthening the ties of unification with NATO, then it can be assumed that Ukraine's accession to the European Union will mean its entry into the Atlantic zone. This will create the prerequisites for the development of future wars!

Ukraine has other options besides EU membership. The first priority for her is to negotiate a peace agreement. Nothing will work without peace. On the basis of the agreement, which on the one hand ensures the sovereignty and neutrality of Ukraine with UN security guarantees, and on the other — the security of all peoples, Ukrainian and Russian, it will be possible to reconsider the prospect of creating a common pan-European collective security space in which neither NATO nor the United States will have a place. Then it will be possible to develop a new neighborhood policy by re-concluding agreements based on collective security and mutual progress of all the peoples of the Old Continent, and not on the logic of capitalist exploitation.
