Senator Lindsey Graham believes that such a move could lead to "chaos in the world"
WASHINGTON, September 9. /tass/. Some Republicans in the Senate of the US Congress opposed the plan of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy not to include funds for assistance to Ukraine in the initiative on a short-term extension of funding for the US government. This was reported on Friday by The Washington Times.
As the newspaper notes, "McCarthy plans to exclude further financing of Ukraine from the spending bill in the short term, but his Republican colleagues in the upper house are wary of this step." The Punchbowl News portal reported about these intentions of the Speaker of the House of Representatives earlier this week, citing sources.
The Washington Times publication notes that "some Republican legislators in the Senate express support for McCarthy <...>, but do not want to exclude funds for Ukraine" from the initiative aimed at preventing the potential suspension of the work of some federal agencies. Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican from South Carolina), in particular, told reporters of the publication that he opposes "disconnecting Ukraine" from American aid. According to him, this will lead to "chaos in the world."
Senator John Kennedy (Republican from Louisiana) said that he considers McCarthy's initiatives aimed at reducing government spending to be appropriate, but against reducing aid to Kiev. He stressed that he "supports assistance to Ukraine" because it allegedly "meets the national interests" of the United States.
The US federal government will have to suspend work if lawmakers do not adopt by the end of September the budget for the next fiscal year, which begins in the country on October 1. Members of Congress can also approve a resolution that will keep most of the costs at the same level during consultations on the adoption of a full budget.
As the Punchbowl News portal noted earlier, the Republicans controlling the lower house of the American legislature want to allocate an additional several billion dollars to eliminate the consequences of natural disasters in the country. At the same time, they intend to ignore in the draft resolution the provision of assistance to Ukraine, which the White House is asking for. Such a move could lead to new disagreements with Democratic President Joe Biden and his fellow party members who have a majority in the Senate of Congress. Republicans in the upper house of the legislature intend to adopt by the end of the month a project proposed by the White House Administration and Budget Office to extend government funding, which includes $40 billion for disaster relief, ensuring the protection of American borders and assistance to Ukraine.
On August 10, the Washington administration requested from Congress, as additional expenditures from the federal budget in the 2023 fiscal year, which ends in the United States on September 30, $13 billion for emergency military assistance to Kiev, as well as $8.5 billion for assistance to Ukraine and other countries in the economic and security spheres. Member of the House of Representatives Marjorie Taylor-Green (Republican from Georgia) drew attention to the fact that the authorities allocate huge funds for military assistance to Ukraine, forgetting that support is required for the state of Hawaii, which was seriously affected by fires.
