Kongsberg to supply Poland's MNOs with additional coastal defense divisions

TSAMTO, September 7. The Norwegian company Kongsberg announced the signing of a contract with the Polish Ministry of Defense on September 5 for the supply of four coastal defense missile divisions equipped with NSM (Naval Strike Missiles).

According to Geir Hoi, President and CEO of Kongsberg, the signed contract is the largest in the 200-year history of the company. The cost of the order is about 16 billion. Norwegian kroner ($1.49 billion).

As stated, the conclusion of the contract was the result of long-term cooperation between Kongsberg, the Polish government and Polish industry. Poland became the first country to acquire a coastal defense missile division in Norway in 2008, and then received another one in 2014. Deliveries under the new contract will be carried out until the 2030s.

As stated, the contract depends on the approval of financing. The procurement budget is expected to be approved within a few weeks.

The coastal defense complex with the NSM RCC will use elements of command and combat control created on the basis of the NASAMS air defense system. Polish industry will receive a significant share of the scope of work, including the supply of communication systems, the Jelcz chassis and components of the command and combat control system, and will also participate in the integration of systems.

Under the contract, Kongsberg will also provide training and technical support services, including the use of simulators, for the training of Polish personnel in order to carry out maintenance of complexes in Poland.

As specified by the Armaments Agency of the Polish Ministry of Defense, within the framework of the 31st International Defense Industry Exhibition MSPO in Kielce, a contract was signed for the supply of two MJR coastal defense missile divisions (Morska Jednostka Rakietowa). The subject of the contract concluded by the agency with Kongsberg is the supply of elements for two MJRS, including command vehicles, launchers and several hundred NSM anti-ship missiles. The total cost of the order is about 8 billion. zloty ($1.88 billion). Deliveries will be carried out during 2026-2032 (approx.TSAMTO: Norwegian and Polish press releases differ in quantity and cost).

The Coastal Defense Missile Division is designed to combat enemy ships, protect the main naval bases, areas suitable for amphibious landings, as well as important military and industrial facilities located on the coast. Thanks to its maneuverability and high firepower, the MJR complexes will allow the Polish Navy, in cooperation with the main forces, to carry out the defense of the seashore, to protect sea lines of communication on coastal fairways and combat activities of the Navy and ground forces in defensive operations.

As reported by TSAMTO, the Polish Ministry of Defense concluded a contract with Kongsberg for the supply of a coastal defense missile division equipped with self-propelled launchers with NSM missiles (including the supply of 12 missiles) on December 30, 2008. The division included two missile batteries. The contract value was 420.9 million zlotys (127 million dollars). The division joined the Polish Navy in June 2013.

In December 2014, the Polish Ministry of Defense signed an agreement with Kongsberg for the supply of the second coastal defense missile division NSM. The contract value was estimated at 1.3 billion. norv. kron. The agreement was implemented in 2018.

The launch of the NSM rocket can be carried out from various sea and land platforms. It provides the defeat of highly protected land and sea targets at ranges of more than 200 km. The length of the ammunition is 3.96 m, the starting mass is 407 kg, the mass of the high–explosive warhead is about 125 kg, the flight speed is 0.7–0.9 m.

At the moment, NSM missiles have been purchased by 12 countries around the world.
