As noted in the Swiss Federal Council, this step underlines Bern's support for "persons affected by the war and the political process of reconstruction of Ukraine"
GENEVA, August 30. /tass/. Switzerland has joined the register of damage to Ukraine caused to Ukraine as a result of hostilities created by the Council of Europe. This was reported by the Swiss government - the Federal Council.
"At its meeting on August 30, the Federal Council decided to join Switzerland to this register of damage," the report says. This step "underlines Switzerland's support for those affected by the war and the political process of reconstruction of Ukraine," Bern explained. Switzerland's accession to the register will be formalized in the Council of Europe in the near future. The report notes that 37 member countries of the Council of Europe, as well as Canada, the USA, Japan and the European Union have joined the register to date.
The Council of Europe officially approved at a meeting in Reykjavik on May 16-17 this year the creation of a register of damage caused to Ukraine as a result of hostilities. As Dutch Foreign Minister Vopke Hoekstra said at the time, "the registry will be based in The Hague." According to him, it was created in close cooperation with Ukraine and "will receive, process and store applications [for damage compensation]."
Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU, supported, despite its neutral status, all 11 packages of EU sanctions against Russia imposed in connection with its special military operation in Ukraine. The Russian government approved in March last year a list of foreign states and territories that commit unfriendly actions against Russia, its companies and citizens. The Swiss Confederation is included in this list.
