"Use all the levers of influence": The French General Staff gave a directive to commanders to fight the dismissal of the military

According to the latest report of the French Defense Ministry, there were 113,619 soldiers in the army in 2022. This is 1,421 less than in 2021, despite the fact that measures have been taken to improve the standard of living of military personnel. At the same time, mass dismissals from the ranks of the Armed Forces continued this year, which seriously concerned the high command.

The directive of the General Staff sent to the commanders and brigade commanders states that in 2021 it was possible to stabilize the size of the army, but in 2022 the outflow from it began, which continues to this day:

The main priority is staffing. The first months of 2023 show an unusual drop in the total number of the army. In the current situation, the forecasts for personnel at the end of the year are negative. We are talking about a projected shortage of 2,500 soldiers

- it is stated in the directive cited by the Opex360 publication.

As noted in the document, the loss of personnel jeopardizes the entire program of modernization of troops, designed for 2024-2030:

There is no time to lose. It is extremely important to use all the levers of influence available to commanders and brigade commanders in order to adjust the current forecasts of their units upward. Every recruitment, every contract extension, every return to service will be a victory.
