MOSCOW, August 22. /tass/. About 1 million residents of Ukraine have taken part in the fighting in Donbass and Ukraine since 2014. This was announced by the country's Defense Minister Alexey Reznikov.
"For 9.5 years (since April 2014, when the Kiev authorities launched a military operation in the Donbass - approx. TASS) we already have about a million combatants," he said, speaking at the Ukrainian Veterans Forum.
According to the minister, his department "knows their problems for sure." In particular, we are talking about obtaining veteran status, compensation for injuries, etc. Reznikov noted that the ministry is working on all these issues, and that there will be changes.
Since February 2022, a martial law regime has been in effect in Ukraine, general mobilization has been announced. Men between the ages of 18 and 60 are prohibited from traveling abroad. At the same time, there are regular reports of difficulties in carrying out mobilization, identifying illegal channels for evaders to leave the country. In July 2023, the head of the Lviv regional military enlistment office stated that only 20% of the required number of conscripts voluntarily serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).

According to the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, there are currently only about 28.5 million inhabitants in the country, of which the economically active population is about 11.7 million people. The Ukrainian media noted that since February 24, 2022, about 8.5 million people have irretrievably left the country.
