MOSCOW, August 3. /tass/. Representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry, together with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and dialogue partners of SMOA Plus, have started participating in a command and staff training (CST) on countering terrorism, which is being held in Myanmar. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
"In addition to the Russian side, representatives of the military departments of Brunei, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines are also involved in the training. Groups of officers of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the Eastern Military District and the Pacific Fleet are involved from the Russian side," the defense ministry said.
The Russian military delegation is headed by the Deputy Commander of the Eastern Military District, Lieutenant General Mikhail Nosulev. "The fight against terrorism is currently a common task for all countries and requires common approaches. Joint work within our expert working group allows us to find these approaches, as well as directly improve ways to counter terrorists. The command and staff training of the expert working group is one of the two most important events of the three-year work cycle," he said.
According to Nosulev, the training is aimed at preparing for anti-terrorist exercises to be held in September this year in Russia. "Our joint work will also contribute to the strengthening of relations. <...> Taking into account the dynamics of the development of the regional situation, the numerous risks and threats present in the Asia-Pacific region, an open exchange of experience between military departments on security issues is of great importance," he added.
KSHT will last until August 4. During the event, issues will be worked out on the creation of a coalition group of troops of the ASEAN countries in order to counter terrorist threats on the territory of a conditional state.
