The US Marine Corps deployed its first Tomahawk cruise missile launch system, which received the designation LMSL ("long-range missile battery").

As noted in the USNI News publication, one LMSL complex includes 16 LRFL launchers carrying one Mk-41 VPU cell. Each of the PU is mounted on a separate mobile ground chassis.

LMSL batteries provide the ability to launch Tomahawk missiles not only from the sea surface or from under water, but also from maneuverable mobile land-based systems

- explained in the KMP.

The number of these complexes is planned to increase gradually. Thus, the 11th Marine Regiment will have a full LMSL division by 2030. At the same time, the LMSL is planned to be used together with the large-sized Typhon long-range PU, which can conduct multiple launch fire with both Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles.

This combination of Tomahawk and SM-6 provides the possibility of an intermediate-range strike [from ground platforms], which became possible only recently due to the withdrawal of the United States from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles [INF]

- the publication says.

The 1987 treaty with the USSR limited the deployment of ground - based missiles with a flight distance from 500 to 1000-1500 km .
