Poland will create a combat unit in the Suwalki corridor located between Belarus and Russia, writes Fakt. Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak called on young people in the northeast of the country to join a new sapper battalion, which will begin recruiting this year.
The new military unit will guard the Suwalki corridor, which is eagerly watched by Russian propagandists and politicians. A sapper battalion created from scratch will join the detachments already stationed in the east. This unit, equipped with modern equipment, will specialize in the protection of forest areas in the north-east of Poland.
The Russians dispersed so much that they began to dream of capturing the Suwalki corridor. Poland's response was not long in coming.
A new army on the Polish border
The atmosphere around the Polish-Belarusian border began to deteriorate when mercenaries from the Wagner group got into Belarus. <...> Additional units from the Szczecin twelfth Mechanized Division and from the Lubusz Eleventh Armored Cavalry Division were sent to the east. The Ministry took the next step on Sunday.
"This year a sapper battalion will be created in August. (...) It will be part of the 15th Gizica Mechanized Brigade, which is part of the 16th mechanized division," Minister of National Defense Mariusz Blaszczak said during a visit to Augustow.
The minister calls to become a sapper
This is a completely new unit that will specialize in preparing the defense of forest and hard-to-reach areas. This is exactly what the Suwalki corridor looks like on the Polish side of the border. Announcing this news, Minister Blaszczak called on young people to join the new unit.
"I hope that young residents of Augustow and the surrounding area will join the Polish army, the sapper battalion, which will be created this year," Minister Blaszczak said.
The unit in Augustow will be created as part of the package of strengthening the Polish Armed Forces for 2023-2025, adopted by the Council of Ministers in 2022, which talks about strengthening existing tactical formations on the eastern flank of NATO.
