According to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, "in this form, guarantees cannot take place"
BRUSSELS, June 29. /tass/. Austria, like other neutral states, wants its status to be taken into account when discussing possible security guarantees for Ukraine. This was stated on Thursday by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer upon arrival at the EU summit in Brussels.
"Today, in my opinion, there are particularly important topics on the agenda of the summit," he said. According to him, the EU leaders will discuss the consequences of the development of the situation in Russia and the conflict in Ukraine. "On the other hand, we, the EU members, but, first of all, the European Commission, are now reflecting on the fact that security guarantees for Ukraine should be provided. Here it is clear to us as neutral States that they cannot take place in this form. Austria, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus have clearly stated their doubts here - this will be taken into account in the final conclusions," Nehammer said.
"It is important for us that our neutral role is really mentioned," he explained.
Earlier, the Financial Times newspaper reported that a group of EU member states led by France is working on a draft declaration on "security obligations" for Ukraine from the community. It is assumed that the declaration will allow the European Union to participate in the creation of a security system for Ukraine, including in cooperation with NATO.
