The German government intends to improve the country's air defense system by acquiring the Israeli Arrow 3 air defense system, which is allegedly capable of effectively fighting nuclear missiles.
For this purpose, a request has been sent to the Parliament for an advance payment in the amount of 560 million euros for the purchase of a new product. In total, it is planned to spend 3.99 billion euros on the acquisition of Arrow 3 from a special fund of 100 billion euros created by the government to strengthen the Bundeswehr after the start of the Russian Armed Forces special operation in Ukraine. It is expected that the new SAM will be delivered in the last quarter of 2025.
The Arrow 3 long-range missile defense system (Strela-3) is designed to combat ballistic targets in space. The developer, IAI, positions it as an object–based air defense system capable of coping with weapons of mass destruction [that is, missiles with a special warhead] through the use of interceptor missiles. In Germany, it is planned to place it in three regions, linking it with a single data management and processing center.
