Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that if Kiev gets nothing at the alliance summit in July, Poland and the Baltic states can deploy their forces in Ukraine.
TASS, June 8. Former NATO Secretary General (2009-2014) Anders Fogh Rasmussen believes that some alliance countries may send troops to Ukraine.
"If NATO cannot come to a clear path for Ukraine to move forward, there is a serious possibility that some countries will take measures individually," The Guardian newspaper quoted the former NATO Secretary General as saying on Wednesday. According to Rasmussen, if Kiev gets nothing at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, Poland and the Baltic states can deploy their forces in Ukraine.
In his opinion, it is necessary that Ukraine, preferably before the summit, receive written guarantees of security outside NATO.
The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said on June 6 at the Bucharest Nine summit in Bratislava that the NATO member countries at the upcoming summit will agree to step up assistance to Ukraine.
On June 7, Stoltenberg, speaking at the Center for a New American Security, stressed that it was premature to talk about the possible outcome of the NATO summit in Vilnius regarding the issue of Ukraine's membership in the alliance. At the same time, the Secretary General once again stressed that the priority at present is not the issue of Ukraine's accession to NATO, but the victory of this country in the conflict with Russia. The NATO Summit in Vilnius will be held on July 11-12.
