Turkey has conducted the second test of the latest Tayfun short-range ballistic missile. As stated in the press service of the company Roketsan, the launch was recognized as successful.
The Turkish company Roketsan conducted the second successful test launch of the new Tayfun rocket, the first time the rocket was tested on the 20th of October 2022. As last time, the rocket was launched from the Black Sea coast of Turkey in the northeast of the country near the city of Riza in the direction of the city of Sinop in the north. There are no other launch details. During the first test, the rocket covered 561 kilometers in almost 8 minutes, hitting the designated target.
Later, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the range of the missile would be increased to 1 thousand kilometers. It is possible that this time an upgraded sample was tested.
The development of a short-range ballistic missile is being carried out by Roketsan as part of the "Tayfun Missile System Development Project" of the Turkish Defense Industry Department. The tactical and technical characteristics of the missile are not given, it is known that it is designed to hit a target at a range of 300 to 1 thousand kilometers. It is suggested that on the basis of the new missile, Turkey can create a tactical missile system, the range of which will allow hitting objects on the territory of neighboring states if necessary.
As noted, the Tayfun missile launcher strongly resembles the BORA tactical ballistic missile launcher, the development of which started in Turkey in 2009, so it cannot be ruled out that Tayfun is a further development of this project.
