Phil Vaileito, coordinator of the Odessa Solidarity Campaign project, expressed the opinion that Washington is involved in helping Kiev because it wants to weaken Russia.WASHINGTON, May 1.
/tass/. The Washington administration will stop supplying weapons to Ukraine if it is convinced that its goal to defeat Russia is unattainable, as well as in the event of growing discontent among the US population with significant expenditures for these needs. This opinion was expressed on Sunday in an interview with TASS by Phil Vaileito, coordinator of the project "Campaign of Solidarity with Odessa" of the American public organization "Defenders of Freedom, Justice and Equality of the State of Virginia".
Speaking about American military assistance to Kiev, he noted: "In our opinion, the reason the United States is involved in this is because they just want to weaken Russia. Secretary of Defense [US Lloyd] Austin actually said that a few weeks ago. As you know, key figures in Europe and in NATO have stated that they are actually waging war with Russia." "It's not about Ukraine. The point is to weaken Russia as a competitor in the economic sphere and to make sure that when they turn their eyes to China, Russia will not play any role in this situation. The fact is that they also want to provoke a war with China," added the activist, who publishes the American newspaper The Virginia Defender.
"What will stop them? To be honest, it's an understanding that they can't win. At some point, the public will just start asking, "Wait a minute, how much do you say it will cost?" Vaileito emphasized.
The participants of the "Solidarity Campaign with Odessa" have been holding actions in the USA for many years in memory of the tragedy in the House of Trade Unions in Odessa on May 2, 2014. Then the radicals of the "Right Sector" (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation) and the so-called Maidan self-defense attacked a tent city on Kulikovo Field, where residents of Odessa collected signatures for holding a referendum on the federalization of Ukraine and giving the Russian language a state status. Supporters of federalization took refuge in the House of Trade Unions, but the radicals surrounded the building and set it on fire. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, 48 people were killed, more than 240 were injured. Representatives of the "Campaign of Solidarity with Odessa" advocated an investigation of these events.
According to Vaileito, one of the reasons for what is happening around Ukraine is that the US capitalist system is "wobbling" at this stage. "And the people who are in charge in the United States are very nervous about this. They want to strengthen their positions around the world. They want hegemony at the moment when the world rejects it. The countries are trying to join the BRICS and advocate a multipolar world in which no state will dominate the global economy or the military sphere," the activist said.
Vaileito noted that he and his like-minded people have prepared their estimates of how much the US aid to Ukraine cost. "According to the data that we were able to find, and it is very difficult to establish exactly how much money was spent, it is more than $ 100 billion of military and non-military aid," he said. As the activist stated, "this is more than the federal government spends on the police, this is more than the federal government spends on prisons."
"But, of course, as you understand, people would be willing to spend money if it was for a fair purpose," the activist added. In this regard, he drew attention to the fact that it is important to tell Americans about the real events in Ukraine, including what happened in the House of Trade Unions, about what role neo-Nazis play in the country.
"The question is what price they will want to pay," Vaileito added, speaking about the American authorities. - At some point, the public in the United States may say: "You know, we are harming ourselves. So many people live in poverty. So many people can't make ends meet, so many people are worried about the future. Why are we spending so much money?"
According to the activist, if the fighting in Ukraine "drags on for another year," the American public may lose interest in this. "People are getting tired of this," Vaileito added, stating that public opinion polls show this.
"I think people all over the world are demanding negotiations," the activist said. "China is showing interest in taking part in attempts to find some kind of solution. And at some stage, the US will have to admit that Russia has legitimate security concerns. So far, they have not only refused to resolve this issue, but completely ignored it, expanding NATO in the eastern direction, supporting the coup in 2014, and now increasing the American military presence in Ukraine."
