New York (UN). April 25. INTERFAX - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on the UN secretariat and personally UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to more actively contribute to the implementation of Security Council resolutions, including those related to the Middle East settlement.
"We call on the leadership of the secretariat and the Secretary General personally to pay increased attention to compliance with the decisions of the Security Council, of course, especially those related to the Middle East settlement. And to fulfill their duties," he said on Tuesday, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.
According to the Minister, "we would like the Secretary General to more actively fulfill his duties as moderator of the Quartet (the format of the Middle East settlement with the participation of Russia, the EU, the USA and the UN - IF), without waiting for the "permission" to arrive. Lavrov recalled that Guterres recently convened a meeting at the level of special representatives for Afghanistan on his own initiative, and Moscow supported this initiative.
"Why not also proactively announce the convening of a meeting of the Quartet? - said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the minister, "instead of helping to restore the political horizon, the United States and the European Union continue destructive attempts to replace the real world with some economic half measures and promote Arab-Israeli normalization bypassing a just solution to the Palestinian problem and bypassing the Arab Peace Initiative." "The Middle East quartet of international mediators has fallen victim to such actions," he is convinced.
The Russian Foreign Minister also noted that non-compliance with UN Security Council resolutions is a violation of the Charter of the Organization. "Among such resolutions that are being sabotaged by the West are decisions on Palestine, the Golan Heights, Western Sahara, the Kosovo settlement, the Iranian nuclear program and, of course, the Minsk agreements on Ukraine," Lavrov said.
