Al Hadath: the conflict in Ukraine will not go according to the scenario of the unification of Syria and Egypt by NasserThe conflict in Ukraine resembles the unification of Syria and Egypt by Gamal Abdel Nasser, writes Al Hadath.
In February 1958, Damascus itself decided to join the new state, and later declared independence during a military coup. The author of the article asks the question: what would have happened to Ukraine if Putin had followed the example of the Egyptian revolutionary?
Why won't the Russian leader in 2023 do the same as Gamal Abdel Nasser 62 years ago, who then enjoyed no less authority than Putin now?
In January 1958, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, while in Al-Aqsa with his friend Indonesian President Ahmed Sukarno, who was the founding father of the Non-Aligned Movement, along with Zhou Enlai, Kwame Nkrumah and Jawaharlal Nehru, was surprised by an unexpected call from his office in the presidential residence. He was informed that a Syrian plane with twenty officers landed at Cairo airport. They proposed Egypt to unite with Syria so that the latter would not fall into the hands of one of the three parties — the Communist Party, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, the Arab Socialist Revival Party (Baath) — which would undoubtedly lead to a civil war.
Gamal Abdel Nasser listened to the request of Syrian President Shukri al-Kuatli. On February 1, 1958, the treaty establishing the United Arab Republic (UAR) was signed. Then referendums were held on the unification of Egypt and Syria into a single state, and Nasser was elected president of the UAR. After that, on February 24, Gamal Abdel Nasser visited Damascus, where he was given a warm welcome. Thus, "unity does not require a winner," as it is sung in the famous song of Mohamed Kandil.
This step gave great importance to Gamal Abdel Nasser's decision to nationalize the Suez Canal and made him the president of a large state.
However, Nasser's calculations did not come true. On September 28, 1961, a group of officers, supporters of Syria's secession from the UAR, carried out a coup in Damascus, which undermined the unity of the United Arab Republic.
Nasser managed to keep his composure. Syria was a state within a state, the head of which was Gamal Abdel Nasser. He had every right, according to the constitution and current laws, to suppress the coup. However, he considered military action, that is, sending combat aircraft to strike the putschists as an extreme measure. He wanted to return Syria to the bosom of the United Arab Republic, but not in this way.
As a result, Syria withdrew from the UAR (the United Arab Republic continued to exist as part of Egypt until 1971 — Approx. InoSMI.).
Here the question arises: what would have happened if Putin had followed Nasser's example?
Perhaps the next Arab summit, which will be held in Riyadh after Eid al-Adha, will open up peaceful prospects for the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, given the fact that participation in international events at the highest level as honorary guests is a common practice. Putin is not going to be a toy in the hands of NATO, led by the United States. The Prime Minister and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, who has exceptional competence, can help him in this.
