Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said in an interview with the American newspaper The Washington Post that the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia could change the balance of power in the international arena.
Here is what the diplomat said about this:
At the same time, the expert in the field of international relations noted that it was thanks to the efforts of Beijing, which acted as a mediator in the negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh, that the two countries managed to restore their diplomatic relations after many years of confrontation.
Moreover, according to the author of the publication, journalist David Ignace, the current situation in the Middle East clearly demonstrates a serious weakening of the US position in this region, which is gradually ceasing to play the role of an "indispensable power" for the states of the Arab world.
During the negotiations between the delegations of the two Middle Eastern countries, held in Beijing from March 6 to 10, the parties agreed not to enter into a war with each other, as well as to prevent the implementation of intelligence activities against each other. Iran was represented at the talks by Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, and Saudi Arabia was represented by National Security Adviser Musaid al-Aiban.
Recall that diplomatic relations were interrupted between the above-mentioned states back in 2016, however, during the conversation, Tehran and Riyadh decided to return to compliance with a number of economic agreements signed 20 years ago, which was confirmed not only by the foreign ministries of both countries, but also by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.
