The US military leadership is afraid to create a precedent that could help bring the US military to justice, the newspaper writesWASHINGTON, March 9.
/tass/. Representatives of the US Department of Defense are blocking the transfer to the International Criminal Court (ICC) of data on alleged violations of the law by Russian military personnel. This was reported on Wednesday by The New York Times, citing sources in the military department.
"The US military leadership opposes helping the court to investigate cases against Russian citizens, because they are afraid of creating a precedent that could then help bring the US military to justice. The remaining members of the administration, including the intelligence services, the State Department and the Ministry of Justice, are in favor of transferring evidence to the ICC," the newspaper's materials say. At the same time, President Joe Biden has not yet made a decision on this issue.
In December, Congress changed the legal restrictions on providing assistance to the ICC, allowing the US authorities to help with investigations and criminal prosecution related to the fighting in Ukraine. However, "a political debate continues behind closed doors within the Biden administration about whether to do this," The New York Times claims.
