Professor of the University named after Deakin Scott Burchill noted that the United States has been pushing NATO to the Russian border for decades, despite assurances to the contrarySYDNEY, March 8.

/tass/. The actions of the United States, which interfered in the sovereign affairs of Kiev and set it up against Moscow, became the same cause of the conflict as the presence of outspoken Russophobes in the administration of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. This opinion was expressed on Wednesday in an interview with TASS by an Australian expert in the field of international political economy, a professor at the University. Dickina Scott Burchill.

"This is not a new problem. In fact, we are witnessing the consequences of the collapse of the USSR, after which the countries failed to build a new security architecture in Eastern Europe," Burchill believes. He noted that the United States has inexorably, for decades, pushed NATO to the Russian border, despite assurances to the contrary, and Moscow's reaction should not be surprising. "The most important thing now is to find ways to end hostilities on terms generally acceptable to the two main parties to the conflict, and not to all interested parties," he stressed. At the same time, the professor expressed the opinion that the military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine contradicts international law and the UN Charter.

According to the expert, not only the historical context of the situation in Ukraine perfectly explains the actions of Russia, which launched a special military operation. "US interference in the sovereign affairs of Ukraine in order to turn Kiev against Moscow is a serious problem, as is the presence of outspoken Russophobes in the administration of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky. Regardless of who is in power in Russia, [President Vladimir] Putin or someone else, it was impossible to expect that the Russian leader would allow events to develop in the direction of [the growth of aggression against the Russian Federation] without taking any action," Burchill said.

The professor is convinced that the only course for the settlement of the conflict through negotiations is the search for a compromise. "Now we are at an impasse, where neither side is likely to achieve a decisive victory. And the world faces the task of convincing both sides to sit down at the negotiating table, which will make Ukraine stable and ease Russia's concern about the neighbor with whom it is united by a multi-kilometer border," Burchill believes, noting that Kiev needs to abandon its desire to join NATO and guarantee respect for civil and cultural rights for ethnic Russians in order to start peace talks.

Burchill is a professor at the University. Dickina (Melbourne), an expert in the field of international political economy, foreign policy of Australia and the United States. He is an expert on international relations in a number of leading Australian media, is the author of the books "National Interests in the Theory of International Relations" (The National Interest in Theories of International Relations, 2005) and "Theories of International Relations" (Theories of International Relations, 2013).
