/tass/. The European Commission (EC) plans to allocate €1 billion for the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine. This was reported on Monday by the Spanish newspaper El País with reference to the draft plan of Brussels.
According to her, the EC calls on member States to immediately send ammunition to Kiev, especially long-range artillery of 155 mm caliber. In addition, to encourage and accelerate supplies to Ukraine, Brussels plans to allocate € 1 billion to reimburse the costs of this assistance and for the joint purchase of ammunition as part of an emergency support package, the newspaper notes.
According to the publication, in order to overcome the resistance of countries concerned about the depletion of their arsenals, a new scheme is proposed, according to which countries will be compensated for up to 90% of the costs of ammunition that they send to Kiev. Brussels also plans to invite non-EU states to join the procurement scheme in order to give it even greater potential. Community defense ministers are expected to discuss the plan this week in Stockholm.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the EU has provided arms supplies to Kiev through the European Peace Fund for €3.6 billion. The entire volume of this fund, planned for the period from 2021 to 2027, is about €5 billion. Therefore, in order to maintain supplies to Ukraine at least at the level of 2022, the EU should expand this instrument this year.
