It would be foolish of us not to be concerned about this potential," Wormut said, commenting on Russia's special military operation in Ukraine at a seminar at the Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies.
"No matter how the war in Ukraine resolves itself in the next year or two, we must think very seriously, feel great concern about the possibility that Putin will try to occupy territories in Ukraine again," Wormut argued.
According to her, the US Department of Defense does not intend to switch completely to China and the Asia-Pacific region and does not believe that Russia, in fact, is stuck in Ukraine and it can no longer be paid attention to. "At the same time, we cannot discount Putin in any way. I don't think we can afford the luxury of focusing only on the regions of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, no matter how much we would like to, frankly," Wormut said. From her point of view, Russia "will continue to pose a threat" that the United States will need to take into account.
