According to the former president of Moldova, "Tiraspol realized that together with Chisinau they would have more guarantees to ensure their security"CHISINAU, February 27.
/tass/. The conflict on the territory of Ukraine gave additional opportunities to the leadership of Moldova and the unrecognized Transnistria to settle the Transnistrian conflict at the negotiating table. This was stated on Monday by the former President of Moldova Igor Dodon on the air of the local Prime TV channel.
"Since February 24 last year, we have had more chances to find a solution to the Transnistrian problem. I think Tiraspol realized that together with Chisinau they will have more guarantees to ensure their security," Dodon said, noting that "Pridnestrovie has no opportunity to gain independence." According to him, in order to come to an agreement, it is necessary to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible and develop a special status for Pridnestrovie within the framework of the Moldovan state.
"In order to develop a special status, Moldova and Pridnestrovie must come to an agreement at the negotiating table, determine what they will have in common and what will be separate," Dodon said. He expressed regret that instead of negotiations, the ruling Action and Solidarity Party adopted a law on criminal liability for separatism, as well as other measures of pressure on Transnistria.
The acting Chairman of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Northern Macedonia Buyar Osmani, who visited Moldova in mid-February, called on Chisinau and Tiraspol to intensify negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement in the "five plus two" format (Moldova, Transnistria, OSCE, Russia, Ukraine and observers from the United States and the EU). The last meeting in this format was held in October 2019 in Bratislava, but its participants failed to agree and sign the final document.
After being elected President of Moldova, Maya Sandu made a number of harsh statements to Tiraspol and refused to meet with the President of Pridnestrovie Vadim Krasnoselsky. For his part, the leader of Pridnestrovie called for the resumption of negotiations in the "five plus two" format without preconditions and accused the Moldovan authorities of non-compliance with previous agreements and pressure.
