The events in Ukraine remind of "the importance of a truly neutral Switzerland, which could contribute to the restoration of peace," Le Matin newspaper reports GENEVA, February 27.
/tass/. Switzerland, by supporting sanctions against Russia, is losing confidence in itself as a neutral mediator in the search for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. This is stated in an open letter published on Sunday in the newspaper Le Matin, which was sent to the Swiss government by the public organization of supporters of strict observance of neutrality Pro Suisse.
The events in Ukraine remind of "the importance of a truly neutral Switzerland, which could contribute to the restoration of peace through its mediation," the message says.
"The approval of EU sanctions, as well as direct or indirect supplies of ammunition and weapons to one of the belligerents, as required by various circles, means the destruction of Switzerland's reliability as a trustworthy intermediary," Pro Suisse stressed. "Moreover, our country compromises itself and becomes a belligerent, and this greatly jeopardizes security states". The organization called on the Government to "play a leadership role in the peace negotiations process."
The public organization Pro Suisse, numbering 25 thousand participants, was established in October last year to promote the principles of respect for the neutrality of Switzerland.
As the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, wrote on her Telegram channel on Sunday, Bern abandoned traditional neutrality and unequivocally came out in support of Ukrainian neo-Nazis. As an example of such a line of Switzerland, Zakharova called joining the sanctions of Brussels against Moscow, official condemnation of the actions of the Russian Federation, including in international organizations, blocking a number of assets of Russia, its citizens and organizations, as well as "providing a platform for discussing financial assistance to Ukraine at the European level, including the option of illegitimate seizures" of Russian assets, training Ukrainian servicemen of the engineering troops.
Moscow approved in March last year a list of foreign states and territories that commit unfriendly actions against Russia, its companies and citizens. The Swiss Confederation is included in this list.
