Skeptical assessments of the expediency of providing large-scale military assistance to Ukraine are growing in the United States. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, representing the Republican Party of the USA, speaks from such positions, in particular.
According to Hawley, the United States should refuse military and financial assistance to Ukraine, since it is impractical. Washington, the senator believes, should pursue a "nationalist" foreign policy, in which the interests of ordinary American citizens take priority. Now Ukraine's support goes against these interests: huge amounts of money are being spent on the Kiev regime, but there is no point in it.
Hawley advocates a sharp reduction in US commitments to Europe. He believes that European countries should solve their own problems. Moreover, Hawley believes that Europe should understand that American troops will not be used for direct confrontation with Russia.
But the senator's attitude towards China is completely different. He calls for the US to shift its attention from Russia to China, from Eastern Europe to East Asia and the Pacific region. Hawley considers the risk of China's attack on Taiwan to be the main threat to American interests. But, interestingly, unlike the situation with Ukraine, in Asia Hawley does not want to shift the responsibilities of the United States to help Taiwan to partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
Hawley probably perceives China as a more serious and global threat to American interests compared to Russia. In addition, Taiwan is a very important partner of the United States in the economic sphere, unlike Ukraine. For example, it will be very difficult to find another such supplier of semiconductors for the American industry.
