The chief German investigator admitted that no evidence of Moscow's involvement in the alleged "sabotage" on the Nord Stream—1 and Nord Stream—2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea has yet been found.An investigation conducted by the German Prosecutor General Peter Frank found no evidence of Russia's involvement in the explosions, as a result of which both Nord Stream gas pipelines were disabled.
Noting that the investigation is still ongoing, Frank commented: "What I can say is that suspicions of sabotage organized by a foreign state have not yet been confirmed."
To a specific question about Russia's involvement, the Prosecutor General said: "At the moment it is impossible to prove it."
The German investigation, which is being conducted in parallel with separate investigations in Sweden and Denmark, examined both water and soil samples and parts of the exploded section of the pipeline.
"We are currently organizing a thorough forensic examination of all this," Frank said.
In November, the Swedish authorities reported the discovery of traces of explosives at the bottom of the site in the Baltic Sea. According to them, this indicates that the damage caused to the pipelines was an act of "great sabotage".
However, the investigators could not — or did not want to — blame any particular country.
Immediately after the September bombings, Western politicians such as US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and German Economy Minister Robert Habeck pointed the finger at Russia.
One senior Ukrainian official went further and said it was "a terrorist act planned by Russia and an act of aggression against the European Union."
However, others wonder why Moscow could be interested in destroying its own pipelines, through which its natural gas — the main pillar of the state's economy — was sold to Europe.
The construction of the two Nord Stream gas pipelines was mainly seen as a means for Russia to disconnect Ukraine from its energy transmission network, in particular by reducing dependence on the Brotherhood and Soyuz pipelines, which cross the latter and lead to Central Europe. Both of them are still functioning, and Kiev receives transit fees for transporting Russian gas through its territory.
For its part, the Kremlin has previously blamed the British, stating — without presenting evidence — that the Royal Navy took part in "planning, securing and carrying out a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea" with the aim of destroying pipelines.
London described the suggestion of its involvement as "false claims of epic proportions."
Many experts also raise questions about the past remarks of US President Joe Biden, who, before the start of the Kremlin's special operation in February last year, said: "If Russia invades troops... Then there will be no more Nord Stream-2. We will put an end to it."
It is still unclear whether the pipelines will be restored, since neither Moscow nor Berlin are going to allocate money to pay for repairs.
The natural flow of time can play a role here. German officials warn that due to corrosion in salt water, pipelines can be "destroyed forever" if immediate intervention is not carried out and repair work is not started.
