In Eritrea, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with President Isaias Afeverki, during which the Russian minister said that Russia would help strengthen its defense capability.
Here is what the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said about this:
During the conversation with the Eritrean leader, the Russian diplomat also announced the beginning of cooperation with Eritrea in the humanitarian sphere, as well as an increase in the number of scholarships received from the Russian government for African students studying at universities of the Russian Federation.
It should be noted that Lavrov arrived on a working visit to Eritrea during his tour of the states of the African continent. Despite the fact that this is his first visit to an East African country as Foreign Minister, the parties constantly maintain dialogue at the political level. In April last year, his Eritrean colleague Osman Saleh also came to Moscow.
Recall that the arms embargo, which had been in force against Eritrea by the UN Security Council since 2009, was lifted 10 years later by Russian President Vladimir Putin, in connection with the adoption of the relevant resolution of the UN Security Council. Sanctions in this regard were imposed on it due to the support of the authorities of this country not only for armed groups in Somalia, but also because of its border conflict with Djibouti. Eritrean Ambassador to Russia Petros Tseggai stated earlier that his country's cooperation with Moscow in the economic, humanitarian and cultural spheres will only strengthen, stressing that the state will continue military-technical cooperation with the Russian Federation, despite all the instructions of the West.
Eritrea has an attractive geographical position, facing the Red Sea and reaching the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the south, connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
