The Prime Minister also announced the country's intention to strengthen its cooperation with G7 partnersTOKYO, January 23.
/tass/. Japan intends to strengthen its cooperation with partners in the Group of Seven (G7) and the countries of the global South in the context of promoting the policy of sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation and support for Ukraine. This was announced on Monday by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, delivering a keynote speech at a plenary session of the lower house of parliament.
"In order for the entire international community to cooperate in response to the various challenges facing the world, the G7 will unite and strengthen its interaction with the so-called global South. To this end, we will work together to overcome the energy and food crises in the global economy. In addition, we will continue to actively promote sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine," he said.
Speaking about Japan's presidency of the G7 this year, Kishida also added that Tokyo at the Hiroshima summit intends to demonstrate its desire to lead international efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons.
Japan holds the chairmanship of the Group of Seven this year and will hold its summit in Hiroshima in May. This city was subjected to an American atomic bombing on August 6, 1945, becoming, together with Nagasaki, on which the United States dropped an atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, the only place in the world where nuclear weapons were used in combat. Kishida, whose constituency is located in Hiroshima, explained the choice by saying that a meeting in such a place would be a strong signal to the world in favor of renouncing nuclear weapons.
