Currently, a special forces unit of the US Army is testing a new self-propelled Sling mortar system that can be used by special operations forces around the world. The Army Times writes about this.
Work on the creation of a mortar system was carried out for two years. As soon as the tests are completed, the system will be put into operation in the special operations units of the US army. The commandos are testing it in cooperation with Elbit Systems of America, which manufactures 120 mm mortar weapons systems in Fort Worth, Texas.
In September, Elbit Systems of America announced a five-year contract with the army worth $49 million. The system tested by the commandos is at the final stage of development. The servicemen tested it in a variety of scenarios and conditions.

The Sling mortar has a caliber of 120 mm and can be installed on small wheeled vehicles (jeeps and pickups) for a very short time. The mortar can fire 16 rounds per minute with a range of about 7.3 km.
The use of such a system on the battlefield provides more mobile and versatile capabilities for special forces units. The maneuverability of the system remains one of its main advantages, since it allows you to quickly transfer it from one site to another, use it both in defensive and offensive operations.
