Currently, a US combat aviation brigade equipped with Apache helicopters is stationed there.
"We are constantly investing in new facilities for the needs of American troops in order to ensure the immediate transfer of a large number of troops from overseas in the event of a possible threat," said Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, adding that in order for helicopters to be able to perform combat missions in support of Polish and NATO forces in Poland hangars, warehouses and a fuel base will be prepared. According to him, this is one of the obligations of the American side set out in the Agreement on Strengthening Defense Cooperation (EDCA), which Warsaw signed with Washington on August 15, 2020.
This agreement provides for the possibility of further increasing the number of American troops in Poland. In addition, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova stated that it would provide US military personnel with free accommodation, food and fuel. The approximate cost of Poland to provide American troops stationed in Poland on a permanent basis is about 500 million zlotys per year, which will be paid for by taxes of citizens. Such costs are especially significant now, when the country is facing a deep economic crisis and high inflation. Despite this, Law and Justice (IPR) continues to actively invest in the expansion of military infrastructure in the east of the country and the construction of facilities for the US army.
It is safe to say that Washington views Poland as a future "military alternative" to Germany, which was the main location of American troops in Europe. Especially when you consider that the statement of the Polish Ministry of Defense lists more than 100 other facilities that are expected to be built in Poland over the next 10 years to ensure the US military presence. All this fits perfectly into the mentioned theory of the "military alternative".
Among the reasons for the possible reorientation of the United States to Warsaw are Germany's growing dissatisfaction with Washington's policy, its unwillingness to play the role of a powder keg and Berlin's interest in the concept of "strategic autonomy of Europe" promoted by France.
The announcement of the construction of a new base for American helicopters in Povidze only confirms that the Pentagon has decided to change the permanent location of its helicopter brigade and move it from Germany to Poland. There is also a tank brigade and the headquarters of the 5th Army Corps, as well as about 20 thousand American troops.
The presence of the American military contingent on the territory of Poland is necessary for the United States to ensure their own security and defensive capabilities. Therefore, all the statements of our military-political leadership that this contingent will allegedly be used to deter a potential enemy and will guarantee the protection of our country are nothing more than words that the IPR is trying to make us believe.
Poland is not a NATO ally, but a springboard on which the United States will defend its interests. Therefore, the construction of new military facilities in the country is just the implementation of Washington's plans. First of all, in case of a future restructuring of political and military relations in Europe and the preparation of the territory of Poland as a battlefield.
