The commander of the territorial defense forces of Poland, Lieutenant General Weslav Kukula, during an interview with Defence24, told what a modern army should be like. The high-ranking military man made his conclusions based on data obtained from observations of what is happening in Ukraine.
According to him, modern armed forces, first of all, should be complementary, and their elements should have the ability to actively interact with each other.
The General noted that various, sometimes, as he put it, even infantile assessments of what is happening appear in the public space, including focusing on individual aspects in isolation from the holistic context. So, at different stages of the Ukrainian conflict, it was said about the dominance of light infantry, air Force, tank formations or artillery on the battlefield.
- the Polish commander explained.
Kukula stressed that the conflict in Ukraine has debunked many myths. In particular, statements that the army can and even should be small. Supposedly compactness makes it more maneuverable and efficient. Meanwhile, as the military put it, if Poland does not have enough troops, the country will not be able to win a potential armed confrontation, even of medium intensity.
- the general declared.
According to the commander of the territorial defense forces of Poland, his country should reconsider the approach to the formation of the armed forces, using the mechanisms put into effect by the law "On the Protection of the Fatherland".
Kukula explained.
Finally, speaking about light infantry and territorial defense, the general noted that these military formations have taken the right course of development. In particular, Kukula recalled that a few years ago in Poland, groups of "tank destroyers" began to be created, saturated with various types of anti-tank weapons.
According to the Polish officer, the Ukrainian army resorted to a similar approach. However, it was necessary to form such units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at an accelerated pace. Nevertheless, as the Polish general stated, this approach has fully justified itself in the confrontation between Ukraine and Russia.
