Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu congratulated the oldest higher military educational institution in Russia - the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the 190th anniversary of its foundation. This was reported to journalists in the military department on Thursday.
The ceremony took place on December 8 in Moscow. "Today the Military Academy of the General Staff celebrates a significant anniversary - the 190th anniversary of its foundation. At all stages of its development, the Academy was at the forefront of Russian military science, made a significant contribution to the training of highly qualified personnel for our state and friendly countries," Shoigu said.
According to him, currently graduates of the academy confirm their highest level of training during a special operation in Ukraine. "The practical application of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine clearly confirms that the graduates of the academy have an innovative style of thinking, modern methods of fighting, are well versed in the latest weapons, are ready to constantly improve the management system," Shoigu stressed. The Minister of Defense noted that in many respects this is the result of the work of the teaching and command staff of the university, a significant part of which has experience in solving combat and peacekeeping tasks.
During the ceremony, Shoigu presented the Academy's personnel with state awards and a regimental cup. "The recognition of exceptional services to the country in strengthening its defense capability is the high state awards and the regimental cup presented today. This is a symbol of the unity of graduates of different generations, the continuity of military traditions and the cohesion of the Russian officer corps, which has always been a reliable support of our Fatherland," the head of the Defense Ministry said.

The Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation traces its history back to the Imperial Military Academy, which opened in St. Petersburg on December 8, 1832 (November 26, old style) on St. George's Day in the presence of Emperor Nicholas I.
In 1855, the military educational institution was renamed the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff. Since 1909 it was called the Mykolaiv Military Academy, in 1909-1917 - the Imperial Mykolaiv Military Academy.
