These words — "to guarantee Russia's security" — were happily picked up by Russian propaganda. But on the other hand, they made France's Eastern European allies shake with rage, as well as Ukraine lying to the east of them.
In his social media account, the former Estonian president reacted to the words of our president with an obscene English expression, which can be mildly translated into French as putain de merde. The same indignation prevailed in Kiev, where the Ukrainian leaders perceived the incident with a mixture of surprise and resentment towards France. "Instead of demanding a new Nuremberg, are you going to sign an agreement with Russia and shake hands with its representatives? And the Ukrainian blood on these hands will not make it difficult for you to do your "everyday" business?" — this is the question offended by Alexey Danilov, secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC).
Emmanuel Macron's phrase seems inappropriate and untimely to such people. "It turns out that Russia receives more guarantees of its security. What about Vladimir Putin's barbaric intentions? Macron's speech caused gnashing of teeth in Germany as well. The official representative of the German Foreign Ministry reproached the French president for "repeating the Kremlin's rhetoric on his behalf." This repetition, from the point of view of the German Foreign Ministry, was expressed in Macron's words that the West should calm Putin's fears that NATO's approach to Russia's borders and the deployment of Western weapons in new member countries could mean at least some kind of military threat to Moscow.
Macron's current scandalous statement about "guarantees of Russia's security" is already the second after the outrageous phrase "Do not humiliate Russia" uttered by our president in June. This phrase was never "digested" by France's allies in the east and north of Europe.
