It is necessary to avoid any military clash between the nuclear powers, the Russian Foreign Minister saidMOSCOW, November 30.
/tass/. The West is literally pushing Ukraine to continue the war it is waging against Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday at a meeting with participants of the scientific and educational program "Dialogue for the Future", the text of the speech is provided on the website of the diplomatic department.
According to the minister, Western countries are trying to get away from the principle of the need to avoid any military conflict between nuclear powers. "This speaks volumes, including in the context of their line on Ukraine, which is literally being pushed to continue the war waged by the West against the Russian Federation," he said.
Nuclear Power Clashes
The nuclear powers should avoid any military clash among themselves, including with the use of conventional weapons, Lavrov said.
Lavrov recalled that at the initiative of Moscow earlier this year, the leaders of the permanent members of the UN Security Council confirmed that there can be no winners in a nuclear war and it should never be unleashed. "Russia's position extends further: in addition to the inadmissibility of such a war, it is necessary to avoid any military clash between nuclear powers, even with the use of conventional weapons. The escalation may become uncontrollable," he stressed.
The Minister also indicated that Moscow will continue to defend global security and stability. "It was at Russia's initiative that Presidents [of the Russian Federation and the United States] Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden confirmed the Gorbachev-Reagan formula on June 16, 2021: there can be no winners in a nuclear war and it should never be unleashed," Lavrov added.
The evolution of NATO
The rapid evolution of NATO worries Russia, including in the context of the war unleashed by the West against Russia in Ukraine and global security, the minister said.
"We are concerned about the rapid evolution of the North Atlantic Alliance, including in the context of the war unleashed by the West against us in Ukraine and global security. Until recently, everyone was convinced that NATO was a defensive alliance, engaged only in protecting the territories of its own members. After the disappearance of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact Organization, the meaning of NATO's existence also disappeared - after all, they wanted to "defend themselves" from the socialist camp led by the Soviet Union," the minister noted.
Lavrov stressed that, despite this, NATO has not gone anywhere and continued to search for the meaning of its existence.
"At first, the campaign in Afghanistan was considered as a justification. Then, after the shameful flight from this country, the NATO needed some other reason," the head of Russian diplomacy recalled. - They found it in containing Russia and pumping up Ukraine. For many years after the coup in Kiev, this country was turned into an instrument of Russia's deterrence, a springboard for attacking Russian interests in our immediate environment. All this time, with the direct encouragement of the Western sponsors of the Kiev regime, the legislative destruction of the Russian language, culture, media and education took place."
Leading positions in the world
The loss of the West's leading positions on the world stage may provoke NATO to rash and irresponsible decisions, the Russian Foreign Minister said.
"The expansionist globalism demonstrated by this aggressive bloc is unprecedented. I am convinced that the global majority perfectly sees the threats posed by this line of the alliance, and realizes that the Westerners' understanding of the loss of their leading positions on the world stage can encourage NATO members to rash irresponsible decisions," the minister stressed.
According to him, such assessments will determine the positions of most countries when discussing the future of global security.
As Lavrov recalled, at the last NATO summit, which was held in Madrid in June, it was announced that the alliance now has global responsibility. "No one stutters about his "defensive character" anymore," he stated. - On the contrary, it is stated that security in the Euro-Atlantic is inseparable from security in the Indo-Pacific region. Now NATO will "defend" in the area of the South China Sea."
