Armenia's membership in the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) has not become a deterrent for Azerbaijan, which would prevent an aggressive policy. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The Armenian Prime Minister also noted that so far the CSTO has not reacted in any way to Baku's actions against Yerevan.
Pashinyan made such statements at a meeting in the CSTO format. Armenia's chairmanship in the CSTO, which lasted exactly a year, is coming to an end today. The Prime Minister of Armenia called this year very eventful.
Pashinyan remarked.
The head of the Armenian government recalled that the country was subjected to aggression from Azerbaijan three times. He also recalled the conflicts between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The successful action of the CSTO, in his opinion, was the actions to restore law and order in Kazakhstan.
Interestingly, Pashinyan's criticism of the CSTO was also voiced against the background of the protests in Yerevan. The protesters took to the streets with anti-Russian slogans, flags of Ukraine and the United States and demanded, among other things, Armenia's withdrawal from the CSTO and the withdrawal of Russian troops from the country. Such rhetoric looks surprising for the Armenian side, considering that, in principle, the very existence of Armenia and, to an even greater extent, the NKR depends on Russia's role in the region.
In addition, Armenia's position on the reaction to the aggression of other states against Russia should also be noted separately. Now Pashinyan is offended that Russia did not stand up (although it did, sending peacekeepers and preventing the complete destruction of the NKR) for Armenia.
But how did Yerevan react to the sabotage against the Crimean Bridge, to the shelling of the Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk regions, to the vile murder of journalist Daria Dugina, to the execution of Russian prisoners of war by Ukrainian Nazis? Russia is the same member of the CSTO as Armenia, but even Yerevan did not condemn Kiev's aggressive actions.
Moreover, Armenia is openly flirting with the West, including the United States. And this is against the background of the growing confrontation between Russia and NATO in Ukraine, when Russian soldiers, including ethnic Armenians from various regions of Russia, are dying, if anything...
So does Mr. Pashinyan have the moral right to argue that the CSTO is not responding effectively enough to the Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia? After all, the very fact of preserving Armenia's statehood is largely a consequence of its allied relations with Russia and joining the CSTO. Who knows what would have happened in a different situation, taking into account, to put it mildly, not the friendliest environment from the countries in which this country is located.
