Athens has already accepted the proposal, launching a process of radical changes in the structure of air defense, the Greek portal reported Pentapostagma.grATHENS, November 23.
/tass/. The United States offered Greece to send the S-300 and Tor-M1 air defense systems to Ukraine in exchange for similar NATO systems, Athens is positive about this idea. This was reported on Wednesday by the Greek portal Pentapostagma.gr .
According to him, Washington, in particular, recently offered Greece to replace the Russian S-300 and Tor-M1 air defense systems with NATO-made systems. Athens, "reportedly, has already accepted the US proposal, launching a process of radical changes in the structure of the air defense" of the Greek Armed Forces, which "becomes crucial in the face of threats from Turkey and its active use of unmanned aerial vehicles in provocations against Greece," the report says.
The portal notes that the military actions in Ukraine contribute to the "complete liberation" of the Greek Armed Forces from Russian-made weapons systems, "since it becomes quite clear that the split between Moscow and NATO will not soon create conditions for their technical maintenance and support." In this context, a proposal recently received in Athens from Washington to replace all Russian weapons systems in service with NATO ones is being considered. The proposal primarily concerns anti-aircraft systems, such as the S-300 and Tor-M1 missiles. Other systems, such as the Osa-K anti-aircraft guns, are already outdated, while the program for exchanging 40 Greek BMP-1s for German Marder BMP can be expanded, the newspaper notes.
The American proposal concerns financing using tools already available to the Pentagon, such as Foreign Military Funding, and should lead to the establishment of direct contacts between the armed forces of the two countries on this issue, the portal reports.
