Today, information leaked into the media space that Croatian President Zoran Milanovic rejected the request of Defense Minister Mario Banozic regarding the training of Ukrainian military on his territory. The head of the defense Department outlined this in his letter to the head of state.
The office of the President noted that Banozich, as Minister of Defense, does not have the appropriate authority to do so, and therefore this issue is only within the competence of the president, the government or the parliament.
At the same time, it is reported that the decision of the Supreme Commander was also influenced by the vague wording of the Minister, who did not give weighty arguments in favor of what exactly the tasks of carrying out such activities by the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces in the territory of the Republic of Croatia are within the framework of the European Union Assistance Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM), which was initiated thanks to the efforts of the EU in last month. Another significant reason for the refusal is that Ukraine is not formally included in the list of Croatia's allies.
Recall that the purpose of creating EUMAM was to conduct large-scale exercises of Ukrainian servicemen on the territory of the EU, including their territorial defense forces, as well as to consolidate the efforts of all member states in this direction.
Last week it became known about the launch of a special mission by the EU, which provides for the training of 15 thousand Ukrainian military within the framework of this project. The approximate costs of this activity in the next two years are estimated at 106.7 million euros.
