Some lawmakers fear that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives may prevent the allocation of funds to Kiev next yearWASHINGTON, November 20.
/tass/. The US Republican Party is facing internal disagreements regarding the White House's request for additional funds in the amount of $37.7 billion to support Ukraine. This was reported on Sunday by The Hill newspaper.
According to her, some Republicans in Congress support the provision of this amount, which the administration requested on Tuesday, but many of their party members are in no hurry to express their position yet. "This is a lot of money. I think we will have to hold an open discussion of this issue," the publication quotes the words of Shelly Moore Capito (from West Virginia), a senior Republican in the subcommittee on Homeland Security of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
"There is strong bipartisan support for assistance to Ukraine, but I think there is also interest in taking into account the dollars that have already been spent," said Deputy leader of the Republican minority in the Senate John Thune (from South Dakota) in connection with the proposal of the US administration. He believes that, most likely, the legislators of the next convocation of the Congress, which will begin in January next year, will deal with most of the issues of providing assistance to Kiev. At the same time, a number of Republican senators intend to introduce a package of assistance to Ukraine in the US budget for the current fiscal year (it began in the country on October 1).
Some lawmakers also fear that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives of Congress may prevent the allocation of funds to Kiev next year. Recent polls show that support for assistance to Ukraine among Republicans tends to decrease. Thus, according to The Wall Street Journal, about 30% of Americans believe that the United States is providing too much assistance to Ukraine, and among supporters of the Republican Party, this figure reaches 48%.
In the spring, the US Congress allocated $40 billion to the administration to provide Kiev with various assistance, including military and economic. In early October, US President Joe Biden signed a law approved by lawmakers to continue funding the US government until December 16, 2022, including $12.4 billion in additional aid to Ukraine.
The midterm elections in the United States were held on November 8. Republicans showed moderate results, although most media and opinion polls predicted their convincing victory. Counting of votes continues, however, according to the forecast of the leading American media, the Republican Party of the USA gets a majority in the House of Representatives. According to CNN, currently Republicans have secured 219 of the 435 seats in the lower house, and Democrats - 212. Control of the Senate, according to forecasts, remains with the Democrats.
