Countries across Europe have faced protests over economic problems, while officials in the United States are asking questions about Kiev's support, Newsweek notesNEW YORK, November 12.
/tass/. The EU's plans to provide assistance to Ukraine in the amount of € 18 billion in 2023 may be under threat due to the position of individual countries of the association, which are going through a difficult period in the economy. This is reported by Newsweek magazine.
As the newspaper notes, "countries across Europe have faced protests due to problems in the economy, while officials in the United States are asking questions about support for Ukraine." The question is whether this will be enough to stop the aid, the publication points out.
Professor of the University of Michigan, Assistant Dean for Research, John Ciorciari, in an interview with Newsweek, noted that the plans of the European Union to allocate €18 billion in aid to Ukraine in 2023 may face difficulties and lead Europeans to a situation where they will have little choice. He recalled that Hungary expressed its readiness to provide assistance to Ukraine through bilateral channels in order not to launch the EU's external borrowing mechanism. "Germany and other key players would not like to let other EU countries off the hook so easily, which have switched to bilateral channels. However, if conditions continue to deteriorate in Ukraine, they may have little choice," the expert said.
At the same time, in the United States, according to a September opinion poll, "more than half of respondents supported diplomatic efforts to end the war, while 47% said they support military assistance only if it is accompanied by diplomatic efforts," the magazine reports.
Other analysts interviewed by Newsweek note that the longer the conflict in Ukraine continues, the higher the request for its completion through a diplomatic settlement. In this regard, the publication points to the recent mass demonstration in Prague against rising energy prices, statements by the Hungarian leadership that their country is not ready to support new sanctions against Russia, economic problems in Greece.
At the same time, the magazine also cites a number of expert opinions that so far the unity of the European Union in helping Ukraine remains strong, and in the EU countries there is a request for further support of Kiev.
