As noted by the newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano, political forces began to realize that most of the society advocating for peace has not had representation in politics and the media lately.ROME, November 7.
/tass/. Italian politicians are increasingly divided in opinion about sending weapons to Ukraine, and this was demonstrated by Saturday's demonstration in Rome for peace and against arming Ukraine. As the newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano writes on Monday, political forces have begun to realize that most of the pro-peace society has not recently had representation in politics and the media.
"The demonstration on Saturday, which expanded the traditions of Catholic pacifism in Italy, became a political fact, despite the fact that people became its engine. Hence the obligation for the parties to maintain consistency, starting with the discussion in parliament of the attitude to the war," the publication quotes the words of the editor-in-chief of the Catholic newspaper Avvenire Marco Tarquinio.
He notes that most of the media covered the demonstration in a "scandalous way", and not as a powerful response of society to what is happening.
In this regard, the newspaper recalls the verbal clash between the former Prime Minister of Italy, the leader of the "5 Star Movement" Giuseppe Conte and the current Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. The first demanded that the new steps of the government, including the upcoming new package of arms supplies to Kiev, be approved in parliament. He pointed out that "the method to which the Movement objected led to the fact that the parliament was excluded from discussing issues on the supply of weapons." Conte warned the minister "not to try" to bypass parliament. In response, Crosetto accused Conte of manipulating pacifism and recalled that his party voted initially for providing assistance to Ukraine, including military, and also that he uses "hooligan threatening methods", accustomed to little democratic methods of governance (a reminder of the instrument of prime minister's decrees in the midst of a pandemic bypassing parliament).
On Monday, Crosetto assured his American counterpart that Rome would continue to support Kiev "for as long as necessary."
Nevertheless, many politicians are beginning to doubt whether the conflict is prolonging the supply of weapons to Ukraine. A number of politicians oppose the supply. This is not only the "5 Star Movement", but also the "Italian Left" and "Greens".
On Saturday, a mass peaceful march was held in the Italian capital, organized by a number of public organizations. According to the organizers, about 100 thousand people took part in it.
The participation of the secretary of the Democratic Party of former Prime Minister Enrico Letta in it turned out to be quite scandalous. He has always been one of the supporters of helping Ukrainians in self-defense, including defending the direction of weapons. On the square, the overwhelming majority opposed the direction of weapons.
Also on Saturday, another demonstration in support of Ukraine took place in Milan. It was organized by the Action and Living Italy parties. Conte commented on their initiative with a rhetorical question: "Is this a demonstration for peace or for war?"
Earlier, the media reported that the new government is preparing another interdepartmental decree with a list of weapons for Kiev. The contents of all previous packages were classified. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that "nothing will change" in the issue of providing military assistance to Kiev, but made it clear that in return Rome expects solidarity and attention to its problems and needs.
