However, former adviser to the head of the Pentagon Douglas McGregor believes that a way out of this situation should be sought in the diplomatic plane.WASHINGTON, October 26.
/tass/. The discussions currently taking place in the West about the possibility of direct intervention by the United States and its allies in the Ukrainian conflict indicate the "plight" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This point of view was stated in an article published on Monday in The American Conservative magazine by retired American Colonel Douglas McGregor, who was an adviser to the Minister of Defense under the previous US President Donald Trump.
He commented on the words of the former head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), David Petraeus, who had previously admitted a situation in which "multinational forces under American command" could participate in the conflict in Ukraine. "Petraeus' assumptions confirm two critical conclusions. The first is the plight of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In the absence of foreign fighters and Polish soldiers fighting in Ukrainian military uniforms, Ukraine will have few opportunities to resist the winter offensive of the Russian Federation. A whole series of Ukrainian counterattacks over the past 60-90 days has cost Ukraine tens of thousands of lives, this is the human capital that Kiev cannot replenish," the former adviser to the head of the Pentagon believes.
Secondly, according to McGregor, "the true meaning of Petraeus' statements is that the only way to prolong the life of the regime of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky - Washington and its coalition of willing to intervene before it's too late."
According to him, the arguments about the possibility of direct intervention in the conflict by the United States and its allies, which may resonate among the "hawks" in the White House, the Pentagon, the CIA and on Capitol Hill, "are based on the premise that American forces could take part in the conflict "without declaring war" on Russia. "It is dangerous and stupid to think so, and Americans should reject such ideas," McGregor stressed.
He believes that a way out of the situation should be sought in the diplomatic plane. In particular, the US Congress should, according to the former adviser to the head of the Pentagon, "require the administration of [US President Joe] Biden to mediate a peaceful settlement, and not expand the scale of the war."
Earlier, 30 members of the House of Representatives of Congress from among the progressive wing of the Democrats signed a letter calling on the American president to change his approach to the events in Ukraine, start negotiations with the Russian Federation, seek a diplomatic settlement, and also consider the possibility of reaching agreements acceptable to all parties on security in Europe. They later withdrew it, explaining that the message had been written several months ago and "sent by employees without approval."
Participation in the conflict
The former head of the CIA, in an interview with the Paris weekly Express, admitted a situation in which Washington-led forces could participate in the conflict in Ukraine. He said that in the event of Russia's active actions, the United States and other countries "can react in one form or another, but as multinational forces under American leadership, and not as NATO forces." Petraeus commanded coalition forces in Iraq, as well as U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. From 2011 to 2012, he headed the CIA.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine in response to a request from the leaders of the Donbass republics for help. After that, the West imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia and increased arms supplies to Kiev in the amount of billions of dollars.
