/tass/. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic believes that the deployment of the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army in Romania brings a sharp aggravation of the situation, which he described as a perfect storm. He expressed this opinion on Sunday, speaking at a meeting of the Central Committee of the Serbian Progressive Party.
"We are approaching what I called the perfect storm at the last meeting. When you have such opposite positions and when everyone is striving for the last boundaries. It is enough to see with what forces Russia is now entering Ukraine. When you see that the Americans have sent their absolutely best unit in the world, and this is the 101st Airborne Division, brought it to Romania [and placed it] a few kilometers from the border with Ukraine, then it becomes clear to you what awaits us, whether it comes to a direct collision or not. It is clear to you that there are no concessions here, and it is clear to me how this will develop further and how it will affect our country," Vucic said at the meeting. The broadcast was conducted by the TANJUG agency.
On Friday, the CBS TV channel, citing the division command, reported that the 101st Airborne Division of the US Ground Forces stationed in Europe is ready to enter the territory of Ukraine in case of further escalation between Moscow and Kiev or an attack on one of the NATO countries. Washington announced the first transfer of the aforementioned unit to Europe in almost 80 years as part of strengthening the eastern flank of NATO last summer. According to CBS, we are talking about 4.7 thousand military personnel. Colonel Edwin Mattaides, commander of the 2nd Brigade of the division, noted that his unit, stationed in Romania, is currently closer to Ukrainian territory than any other US forces, and "closely monitors" the actions of the Russian Armed Forces, "building targets for training" and conducting exercises that "accurately repeat what is happening" in Ukraine.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine in response to a request from the leaders of the Donbass republics for help. The West then imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia and increased the supply of weapons and military equipment to Kiev in the amount of billions of dollars. In addition, the United States announced the transfer of additional forces to Europe to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. At the same time, US President Joe Biden has repeatedly stressed that he does not intend to send American troops to Ukraine.
