Hydrogen-diesel engine
Researchers from the University of New South Wales has developed a technology modernization diesel engines, which allows to translate them to work on a mixture of diesel fuel and hydrogen. It was created based on the fact that the transition to green energy would render millions of old engines, while a new hydrogen fuel system and the engine still will not have time to become widespread. This transition period need something to fill – Australian engineers have proposed the creation of hybrids.
Upgrading adds to the diesel engine of the two key components. The first is that some injection for hydrogen, while maintaining the injection for diesel fuel. The second component is a system of two independent controllers of the flow for each type of fuel. This gives you the flexibility to monitor the status of the combustible mixture directly in the cylinder at different stages of motor operation and smooth out the difficult moments. It is reported that hydrogen addition has allowed to increase the efficiency of the diesel engine by 26 %. But far more important that carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 85 %. Because the system uses a mixture of 90 % hydrogen and 10% diesel fuel, there is no sense in high purification of hydrogen. This reduces the requirements for its generation, reduces the cost of the system and reduce the cost of upgrading existing engines.
