/tass/. French MEP Thierry Mariani accused some EU partners of trying to indirectly weaken the economy by increasingly dragging countries into the Ukrainian conflict and called for finding ways of peaceful settlement. He said this on the air of the BFM TV channel on Friday evening.
"Some of our overseas allies dream that this war will last for three years, because it will weaken Europe and it will have to pay huge bills. It will be even more serious than a pandemic," Mariani said. He added that within the EU there are also supporters of more active participation in the conflict in the person of Poland and the Balts, but he explained their aspirations by attempts to "settle some old scores" after leaving the USSR.
"As for the reaction with the connection to this war, I don't feel that this is my war. Who can believe that France is in danger? In fact, we are joining the war on the side of the state, which causes sympathy through propaganda and playing on emotions, but we are not in an alliance with it," he said. "I don't want my country to enter a war, which, again, is not my war."
Mariani stressed that many French media mainly pick up the narratives of Ukrainian propaganda. He said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "does not want peace" and is trying to "drag Europe into an endless conflict." Mariani urged not to forget about the crimes of the Ukrainian side, "which has been bombing civilian homes since 2014." "I believe that nothing has been completed since 2014," he stressed.
"Europe is being dragged into a dangerous spiral, and today we must ask ourselves how to achieve peace," he said. In response to a question about whether it was necessary to completely abandon intervention in the conflict and not help Ukraine, the politician said that France should have shown itself better in the diplomatic field. He cited as an example the successful resolution of the conflict in Georgia in 2008 with the mediation of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
