Sasha Baker, Assistant Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs of the United States, discussed issues related to the expansion of the American military presence in the republic with Nikos Hardalias, Deputy head of the Greek Defense Ministry, on Tuesday. This is stated in a statement issued by the Pentagon press service.
According to the document, Baker met with Hardalias in Washington "to discuss defense cooperation" between the countries. They "exchanged views on the expansion of the United States military presence in Souda Bay and elsewhere in Greece in order to strengthen NATO support, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Black Sea and the southern flank of the alliance." The parties "also discussed the important role of the port in Alexandroupolis in terms of providing reliable access to the eastern flank of NATO, especially to assist Ukraine."
Baker noted that Greece "actively supports Ukraine." She called for "dialogue between Greece and Turkey to reduce tensions."
