The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the World Organization Vasily Nebenzia believes that the UNGA special session was convened to promote the narrative against RussiaUN, October 10.

/tass/. Russia has made a strong protest in connection with violations when deciding on the voting procedure in the UN General Assembly on the American resolution condemning Moscow for holding referendums in the liberated territories. This was announced on Monday by the permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the world Organization Vasily Nebenzia.

Russia had previously proposed to hold a secret vote on this resolution, but Albania opposed it, and the UN General Assembly eventually approved an open voting format. "We declare our strong protest against the blatant order of conduct of the meeting," the diplomat stressed, speaking at a meeting of the special session of the UN General Assembly on the situation in Ukraine.

He noted that in the UN General Assembly, in the process of resolving the issue, Russia was deprived of the right to speak, her speech was distorted and "now they are trying to steal from the UN member states the right to freely express their point of view."

According to him, the Russian Federation demands to put the issue of secret voting on the resolution on referendums to the UN General Assembly. "Mr. Chairman, since you did not allow us to do this in a normal manner when we asked for it, we demand now to put to the vote our proposal to suspend rule 87 in its entirety, including its paragraph "b" (that all voting at the UN General Assembly, except for election issues for various positions, should be conducted in an open format - approx. TASS)," he said.

Russia insists that the earlier vote on the Albanian proposal concerned the approval of an open voting format, so the Russian proposal cannot be considered a repeat of it.

Nebenzia also said that a special session of the UN General Assembly was convened to deliberately promote the anti-Russian narrative. According to him, "there has never been such a scale of cynicism, confrontation and extremely dangerous polarization as now in the history of the world organization." "This is especially evident at this session, the politicization of which follows from the fact that it was specially created to promote a narrative directed against one state - the Russian Federation," the diplomat said.

Nebenzia believes that the US resolution on referendums is another step towards splitting the UN. "A low-grade and unprecedented provocation in the [UN] Security Council was used as a pretext for resuming the special session. We were asked to support a document in which we would condemn ourselves," the diplomat said. "What does it have to do with maintaining peace and security or finding ways to resolve the conflict? - he continued. "This is another step towards division and escalation, which, we are sure, is not needed by the overwhelming number of states whose representatives are in this hall today."

According to him, NATO aims to defeat or weaken Russia. "NATO, which we actually faced in Ukraine, needs only an escalation of the conflict as a step towards the cherished plan that has been hatched and prepared for many years: to defeat or at least weaken Russia," he said.

On September 30, the United States and Albania submitted to the UN Security Council a draft resolution condemning referendums in the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Russia vetoed this document. Brazil, Gabon, India and China abstained from voting. According to the Western resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted in April, a meeting of this body will be convened every time a veto is used in the Security Council by one of the permanent member states. The General Assembly must meet within 10 days from the date of the use of the right of veto.
