/tass/. The European Union (EU) plans to train up to 15 thousand Ukrainian servicemen as part of a special training mission. This was reported on Monday by Der Spiegel, citing its own sources.
According to him, in recent weeks, at the working level, the EU member states have reached an agreement that up to 15 thousand Ukrainian soldiers should be trained outside the country as soon as possible. According to diplomats who took part in the negotiations, 3 thousand servicemen from Ukraine should undergo special training, for example, tactical and combat training for commanders or courses for sappers.
The mission plans, which the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel proposed only at the end of August, according to the newspaper, should be determined in mid-October. According to European diplomats, this can happen very quickly. Until now, some EU countries have trained Ukrainians in the framework of bilateral projects. For example, the Bundeswehr in Germany trained the military to control weapons systems supplied by Berlin, such as self-propelled howitzers Panzerhaubitze 2000 or ZSU Gepard. Additional personnel are currently being trained at various facilities for this and other German weapons systems.
When the EU launches a mission called the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM), the activities of individual states will be combined, which should also ensure more effective coordination. However, among the EU countries, as the publication points out, there were some disagreements about the details of the mission planning. So, Poland proposed to create a kind of central training camp for the Ukrainian military near the border with Ukraine. The Polish side, in particular, planned to train almost entire combat formations of up to a battalion there. Germany opposes this.
Poland, as the publication emphasizes, should create a kind of small headquarters, which in military language is called the "Headquarters of the armed forces", having received EU funds for this. Instead of a centralized training camp, it is planned to conduct separate training courses in EU countries. Germany has already announced its intention to conduct its own training in the Bundeswehr.
The final details of the EUMAM mission are to be agreed in Brussels next week. It is expected that the draft will be adopted at the next official meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs on October 17.
