/tass/. The United States authorities discussed on Friday with allies efforts to influence Russian elites by confiscating assets, as well as measures aimed at forcing the Russian Federation to "pay reparations." This is stated in a statement published by the American Ministry of Finance.
As follows from the document, First Deputy US Treasury Secretary Adevale Adeyemo and Deputy Minister of Justice - Attorney General Lisa Monaco participated in a meeting of the international task force REPO (Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs, a multilateral body of the West engaged in the search and seizure of property related to Russia on the basis of sanctions). Representatives of Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the USA, France, Japan, as well as the European Commission "discussed ongoing initiatives to improve already effective mechanisms for confiscation and to maximize the impact of <...> joint work on Russian elites <...>" in light of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
The participants of the meeting "noted legislative efforts, including proposals of the [US] administration for accelerated confiscation of assets of oligarchs." As follows from the statement, Washington and its allies, in particular, expect to force Moscow to fulfill its alleged "obligations to pay reparations" by imposing sanctions, freezing Russian assets and taking other measures. Details regarding this are not given.
