/tass/. South Korean-made weapons worth 75 billion kronor (about $2.9 billion) will be delivered to Ukraine in transit through the Czech Republic. This was reported on Thursday on the website of the newspaper Mladá fronta DNES.
We are talking, according to the newspaper, about anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) and ammunition, in particular about the Chiron SAM (Korean name Shingung), used to repel attacks by aircraft flying at low altitudes.
The delivery, which will be one of the largest during the conflict in Ukraine, is paid for by the American side. The weapons will be delivered to the republic to "one of the Czech arms companies". Then, as a gift, it will go to Ukraine.
Czech Defense Minister Yana Chernokhova, answering a question about plans to supply South Korean weapons through the Czech Republic, told the newspaper: "I don't want to comment on [the] media speculations [about the supply of weapons to Ukraine]. Czech Republic's assistance to Ukraine continues. For security reasons, as I said earlier, we will not specify it." The republic, as the newspaper recalled, has currently sent military aid to Ukraine for about 4 billion crowns (about $ 157 million).
South Korean weapons cannot be sent to Ukraine directly because of Seoul's official position. Back in the spring, South Korea announced that, despite the great interest of the Ukrainian side, it would not supply weapons to a state where a military conflict was taking place. Assistance can only be provided by the supply of "non-lethal material", which is helmets or bulletproof vests.
The United States and other countries have sent Ukraine more than 25 thousand weapons used against aviation to prevent Russia from "gaining air supremacy in battles on the territory of Ukraine," the newspaper writes.
