The Minister of defence of Germany Christine Lambrecht gave the keynote speech. She said that in connection with the special operation in Ukraine, the German government should revise the defense policy of the country. According to the Minister, the military security should be the main task of the state in the coming years. It requires significantly increase the military budget and invest in it a lot more than is already provided in the supplementary Fund of 100 billion euros for the purchase of weapons and equipment for the Bundeswehr.
Lambrecht said that the maintenance of the army, the exercises in the country and participation in operations abroad costs a lot of money. In the current geopolitical situation on the European continent and in the world Bundeswehr required a lot more resources — military budget should be at least 2% of GDP, as required by NATO standards, the Minister said.
The Minister demanded a rethinking of the General defense policy, saying that "those who want peace and freedom, one must be aware that military security is the Central task."
— says Lambrecht.
The ruling coalition of the Social democratic party of Germany (SPD), which applies to the current defense Minister, recently criticized by political opponents due to the fact that the Federal government still does not want to supply to Ukraine, heavy equipment, especially tanks and armoured vehicles. Despite this, the office, Olaf Scholz, apparently, is not yet ready to change the position in this matter.
Lambrecht said that Kiev sending heavy weapons, including tanks Leopard, yet is not, despite the fact that the German defence companies are ready to carry out such an order. The Minister said that no other country has still not put Ukraine armored vehicles of the Western model, and the Bundeswehr should not take the initiative in this matter.
Whether the German economy, which is experiencing the most powerful over the past decade, the crisis, to pull the appetites of the Bundeswehr — the big question. Some Western experts predict that German industry has a big problem, until the de-industrialization, due to the energy crisis caused by the anti-Russian EU sanctions. The country has massively closed businesses of small and medium-sized businesses, the turn comes to industrial giants.
Steel giant ArcelorMittal has announced plans to close two plants in the North of the country and to send employees on leave. Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, Germany's largest producer of ammonia and urea, two important chemical materials, closed their production of ammonia in Saxony-Anhalt. All this leads to the destruction of the logistics market and can create a "Domino effect", which will affect the defense industry, and not only in Germany.
