TSAMTO, August 29. Raytheon Missiles and Defense, a division of Raytheon Technologies, announced the signing of a contract for the supply of NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) medium-range air defense systems.
The sale value is $182.295 million. It is expected that the systems will be transferred to Ukraine in response to a request from the authorities of this country for protection against modern air threats. The work must be carried out at the Tewkesbury plant (pcs.Massachusetts) until August 23, 2024.
According to Tom Laliberti, president of Raytheon's Land Warfare & Air Defense division, the company and partners will strive to deliver the air defense systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as soon as possible, which will join the dozen countries of the world that purchased the complexes earlier.
As stated, the NASAMS air defense system jointly developed by Norwegian Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) and Raytheon Missiles & Defense includes the Sentinel radar, the KDA fire control center and launchers with advanced AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. The complex allows you to identify, capture and hit enemy aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles.
As reported by TSAMTO, on July 1, the US Department of Defense announced the allocation of an aid package in the amount of $ 820 million within the framework of the USAI (Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative) and direct orders of the US President in accordance with his authority (PDA). The package included the delivery of two NASAMS air defense systems.
On August 24, the US Department of Defense announced the allocation of up to $3 billion in additional security assistance within the framework of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This package, in particular, included six NASAMS air defense systems with additional ammunition.
It is assumed that the first two SAMs will be transferred from the US Armed Forces, and the remaining 6 will be newly built.
The main means of destruction of the NASAMS SAM is the ground-based version of the AIM-120 AMRAAM UR air-to-air missile, capable of hitting aerial targets at ranges from 2.5 to 25 km.
In addition, the AMRAAM-ER interceptor is at the final stage of development, characterized by an increased range and effectiveness of hitting the target. According to the developers, the range of hitting targets with the AMRAAM-ER missile should exceed 40 km, height – 13.6 km.
